The Town of Nokia

In 1865 engineer Fredrik Idestam (1838-1916) established a wood-pulp mill and started manufacturing paper. Idestam named his company "Nokia" which was the name of a manor nearby. This is how the Nokia Corporation was born. More about the history of Nokia.

The Nokia factory was succesful and attracted a large workforce and a small community grew up around it. That community grew into a village called Nokia that still exists on the riverbank of Emäkoski in Finland. The paper mill village has grown to a town of 28 000 inhabitants (2006).
